1/16/2013

UPDATE 1/16/2013

Despite the reported flu vaccine shortages in the news Island Drug & LaConner Drug have secured another order of flu vaccine for our three locations that arrived today!

As the CDC has stated (see 1/8/13 update below) if you haven't received your flu shot, NOW is the time to get vaccinated.  As always, Island Drug & LaConner Drug are your most convenient vaccination destinations offering immunizations every hour we are open.

The advice to get your flu shot aslo comes from the Washington State Department of Health:
Flu activity is widespread across the state. Data suggests that this flu season is more severe than the previous two seasons. The flu vaccine is a good match to the strains circulating and offers the best protection. Flu affects people of all ages and can be a serious illness resulting in hospitalization and death. Protect yourself and others by getting vaccinated, washing your hands, covering your cough and staying home when you’re sick.

The CDC has stated that the influenza activity was slightly across the epidemic level for 2012-13 Influenza Season Week 1 (see graph below)

CDC Graph
This trend of increased influenza activity has hit Washington as well:

Flu Season is hitting early and hard.

There has been much media coverage of increasing flu cases across the country.  We have seen the same spike in Washington, mostly in Influenza A.  This is very good news because the type of Influenza A circulating in the highest numbers is a match to one of the three strains in the flu shot.  TRANSLATION:  If you haven't gotten your flu shot, NOW is THE time to do so.  From the CDC:

“Anyone who has not already been vaccinated should do so now,” Bresee says. “And it’s important to remember that people who have severe influenza illness, or who are at high risk of serious influenza-related complications, should get treated with influenza antiviral medications if they get flu symptoms regardless of whether or not they got vaccinated. Also, you don’t need to wait for a positive laboratory test to start taking antivirals.”
Island Drug & LaConner Drug are your most conveinent vaccination destinations and as we do every year remain committed to making the flu vaccine avaialble all the way THRU flu season.  WE HAVE THE FLU VACCINE IN STOCK AND AVAILABLE EVERY HOUR WE ARE OPEN!
